
9/1 Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts
- provides project support to curatorial programs at museums, artists' organizations,
and other cultural institutions to originate innovative and scholarly presentations
of contemporary visual arts; projects may include exhibitions, catalogues, and
other organizational activities directly related to these areas. The program
also supports the creation of new work through regranting initiatives and artist-in-residence
programs. The work of choreographers and performing artists occasionally is
funded when the visual arts are an inherent element of a production. The Foundation
also supports efforts to strengthen areas that directly affect the context in
which artists work - such as freedom of artistic expression and equitable access

9/1 Harden Foundation - funds arts and culture
in Monterey County, especially in Salinas. The Foundation will consider proposals
for one-time capital grants, special projects, and operating support. Requests
for ongoing operating support are discouraged. Grant requests should not exceed
$100,000 (also 3/1).
9/1 Argosy Foundation: Contemporary Music Fund
- supports the creation, performance, and recording of new music. Must be submitted
online. (Also 3/1).
9/1 Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts
- offers 2 - to - 8 week residencies for writers, visual artists, and music
composers in Nebraska City, NB. The program provides housing, studio space,
and a $100/week stipend. There is a $25 application fee. Approximately 38 residencies
are awarded per year. The 9/1 deadline is for the following January through
June 15 (also 3/1 for the following July through December 15).
9/2 Stanley S. Langendorf Foundation LOI (except
for previous grantees in teh past five years) - Funds organizations that benefit
community services/social services, youth, primary and secondary education,
and the arts. Considers applications solely from organizations located in and/or
providing services to the residents of the City and County of San Francisco.
Can email of postmark, but email preferable. Full application deadline, if invited,
is 10/1.
9/5 National Endowment for the Arts: The Arts
on Radio and Television - supports projects for radio and television arts programs
that are intended for national broadcast. Grants generally range from $20,000
to $200,000. Project period begins 5/1.
9/8 USArtists International (USAI) - a program
of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for
the Arts, USAI is the only national initiative solely dedicated to promoting
the work of American performing artists abroad. Formerly limited to supporting
dance and music ensembles invited to perform at international festival in Europe,
USAI will now encompass festivals anywhere in the world outside the United States.
The program will also be open to support American theater companies and solo
performances in all performing arts disciplines. This deadline is for projects
taking place between 11/1/08 and 10/31/09 (also 1/9/09 for projects taking place
3/1/09-2/28/10, and 5/4/09 for projects taking place 7/1/09-6/30/10).
9/12 Association of Performing Arts Presenters
Cultural Exchange Fund Round 3 - an international travel subsidy program supported
by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation that will assist professionals within the
presenting field to build partnerships and collaborations. These new relationships
will lead to expanded presenting and touring opportunities in the U.S. for deserving
international work, and support long term development projects, residencies
or commissions.
9/12 Jim Henson Foundation: Full Proposal (if
invited) - must have submitted LOI on 5/2/08.
9/15 The John Simon Guggemheim Memorial Foundation
annually offers fellowships to further the development of scholars and artists
by assisting them to engage in research in any field of knowledge and creation
in any of the arts, under the freest possible conditions. The foundation provides
fellowships for advanced professionals in all fields (natural sciences, social
sciences, humanities, creative arts) except the performing arts. Fellowships
are not available for students. The foundation only supports individuals; it
does not make grants to institutions or organizations.
9/15 The Ethel Louise Armstrong Foundation, Inc.
(ELA) (Online Program Approval Deadline) (RECEIPT deadline) - supports programs
that support professional artists with disabilities or encourage a professional
environment while enhancing creativity among people with disabilities who are
not professional artists themselves; program approval must be gained prior to
submission of application on 11/1.
9/15 Grants for the Arts Nonrecurring Events Fund
- (formerly the Promotion Fund) provides funding for San Francisco arts organizations
not currently on the GFTA docket, to promote one-time only extraordinary programming
opportunities such as first-time festivals and celebrations, promotion of a
new venue, or a significant program that may provide an unusual boost to the
organization. Grants up to $10,000, not to exceed 25% of the project budget.
For events scheduled for the following January or later.
9/15 Carol Franc Buck Foundation - main focus
is on aiding in the production of opera, symphony concert series, and productions

9/15 Judith Rothschild Foundation Grant Program
in Painting, Sculpture, and Photography - makes grants to present, preserve,
or interpret work of the highest aesthetic merit by lesser known American artists
who have died after September 12, 1976 or before March 7, 2008; examples of
grants include support for: the organization of exhibitions; the acquisition
of works of art for display and study in museums and public galleries; the development
of accompanying public programs, films, or videos; the preparation of publications;
scholarly and critical pursuits; and, the conservation, cataloguing, and safe-keeping
of works of art. Provides project support for projects in painting, indcluding
works on paper, collage and relief; sculpture; and photography; multi-media,
film, video, performance, conceptual art or crafts are not included.
9/15 Sullivan Foundation (RECEIPT deadline) -
provides cash awards to gifted singers in the early stages of their professional
careers to be used for any career-related purpose. Applications are for auditions
to be held in New York on November 3, 4, and 5.
9/15 Aaron Copland Contemporary Music Supplemental
Program - Funds contemporary music projects of organizations not covered under
performing ensembles or recording program (e.g. presenters).
9/15 J.M Kaplan Fund Furthermore Program - supports
nonfiction book publishing about the city; natural and historic resources; art,
architecture, and design; cultural history; and civil liberties and other public
issues. Applicants must be 501c3 organizations. Grant recipients have included
civic and academic institutions, museums, independent and university presses,
and professional societies. Trade publishers and public agencies may apply for
grants in partnerhip with an eligible nonprofit sponsor. Applications from individuals
are not accepted. Grants range from $500 to approximately $15,000 each and may
support writing, research, editing, design, indexing, photography, illustration,
and printing and binding (also 3/15).
9/19 San Francisco Arts Commission Individual
Artist Commissions - makes grants to individual artists living and working in
San Francisco for a specific personal artistic project which, in turn, stimulates
the creation and presentation of high quality works of art throughout the City's
neighborhoods; the 2008-09 round is for literary, media, and visual arts; grants
of up to $10,000 will be awarded. Guidelines available on website in July.

American Masterpieces: Visual Arts Touring (ONLINE RECEIPT DEADLINE) - funding
to achieve the following outcome: through the creation and touring of major
exhibitions, art of the highest quality -- that otherwise would not be available
-- will be experienced by Americans in communities across the nation. Grants
generally range from $30,000 to $300,000.

8/4 - 9/22 Creative Capital/Andy Warhol Foundation Arts
Writers Grant Program - a three-year initiative designed to support writers
working on contemporary art. The program aims to promote critical discourse
that is both rigorous and accessible, to foster innovation in arts writing,
and to encourage writing that nurtures connections between art and the public
at large. The program will recognize and support the contribution of individual
arts writers through project-based grants ranging from $3,000 to $50,000 each.
Contemporary art historians, critics, curators, journalists, and experts from
other disciplines who focus on the visual arts are invited to apply.
9/26 San Francisco Arts Commission Arts &
Communities: Innovative Partnerships Program: Realization Grant - Over three
years, the Arts & Communities Initiative will seed and make visible fresh,
dynamic, and meaningful ways that arts and non-arts sectors can creatively work
together to invigorate San Francisco's rich and diverse neighborhoods and communities.
The Initiative will support artists and arts organizations of any medium, as
they embrace the role of lead partners, and work closely with community partners,
their leaderships, and constituencies. Two types of grants are available: 1)
Exploration Grants - for the exploration of ideas and to engage in substantive
planning. Awards will be between $5,000 and $10,000 for a period of up to nine
months. 2) Realization Grants - to support well-conceived and planning projects.
Awards are up to $35,000 over a period of eighteen months. Check the website
or call CEG staff for Exploration Grant deadline. Organizations applying to
the Arts Commission: Cultural Equity Grants Programs are now required to have
their California Cultural Data Project profile completed in order to apply.
9/26 National Endowment for the Arts American

creation, promotion, and exhibition of visual arts, multimedia, or video. Notification

- designed to enable Marin artists to pursue opportunities which further their
careers. Examples include attending a booking conference or audition, purchase
of a specific piece of equipment, or professional documentation of an artist's
work. These grants are open to artists in all disciplines. The maximum grant
amount is $1,500 (also 2/15, 5/15).
ALSO: Society for the Arts in Healthcare Consultancy
Grants (RECEIPT deadline) - through the support of the National Endowment for
the Arts, the SAHC offers a Consultancy Service to assist organizations in developing,
re-imagining or sustaining their arts in healthcare programs. Consultations
can provide advice on programs utilizing a diversity of arts media including
performing arts, visual arts, literature, film, or design as well as interdisciplinary
programs serving an equally wide array of patient populations and clients. Projects
can range from specific technical assistance such as designing a job description,
creating a survey, feedback on a grant application, or developing guidelines
for exhibitions to broader strategic plans. Prospective clients can request
the number of hours that would be most appropriate for their needs. 2007 deadline
was 9/15. New guidelines will be announced in summer or fall of 2008. Keep checking

ALSO: Frameline Film and Video Completion Fund
provides $5,000 to $10,000 grants for the completion of documentary, educational,
narrative, animated, and experimental media projects about or of interest to
lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their communities. Applications
from women and people of color are encouraged. Works may be of any length and
in any film or video format. No funds available for script development, research,
pre-production, or production. VHS (NTSC or PAL) videotape of work-in-progress
required with proposal. Work must be completed within 12 months of receiving
