ONGOING DEADLINES

ALTRIA    - primary focus giving areas: hunger relief, domestic violence prevention, and the arts. Altria also makes grants in humanitarian aid. The 2007 Altria Group grant cycle is by invitation only. All organizations invited to apply have been contacted.

Amateur Chamber Music Players (ACMP) Foundation    - funds programs that foster the playing and singing of chamber music for people of all ages and skill levels; program areas are Community Music, Weekend Workshops, Special Initiatives, and Home Coaching. ACMP Foundation grants are typically small, generally ranging from $1,000-$3,500. Awards are very program directed. (See program area information on website for rolling deadlines.)

Annenberg Foundation    - funds education and youth development; arts, culture and humanities; civic and community; health and human services; and animal services and the environment. The Foundation exists to advance the public well-being through improved communication and encourages the development of more effective ways to share ideas and knowledge. The Foundation only considers organizations defined as a public charity and tax exempt under Section 501(c)(3). It accepts letters of inquiry at all times during the year and there are no deadlines.

Arts Council Silicon Valley Applied Materials Excellence in the Arts grants program enables Arts Council Silicon Valley to provide funding opportunities to its grantee base in two focus areas: (1) organizational infrastructure through "Leadership and Organizational Enhancement" grants and (2) artistic programming through "Artistic and Program Excellence" grants. Quarterly deadlines in 2006-07 were 9/25/06, 11/20/06, 2/12/07, and 4/30/07.

Bayer Foundation    - a longtime proponent and sponsor of programs designed to integrate science and the arts; also interested in unique arts education programs designed to reach young audiences so as to create future patrons of the arts; funding predominately for Berkeley organizations. Although a rolling deadline, the Board typically meets in January and September.

Bothin Foundation    - limited support for arts organizations that serve predominantly youth. The Foundation typically only makes grants for capital, building, and equipment needs. Three distribution meetings a year (February, May, and October) funding requests must be received 12 weeks prior to a meeting.

East Bay Community Foundation - Grants for the Community Engagement and Community Investment programs have been suspended. Their new focus is as follows: The East Bay Community Foundation will host a series of Community Meetings to present its grant guidelines for 2008-09 (check website for details). 2008-09 emphasis is on (1) Support for children to succeed - preparing children at both pre-school and school-age levels to succeed, with a focus on the critical period of birth to third grade. (2) Economic Development - enhancing economic opportunities for adults and families, particularly those with significant barriers to achieving employment and financial stability.

Fort Mason Foundation "In Performance Series"    - provides underwriting for a portion of production expenses at Cowell Theater. Currently, the maximum award is 50 percent of Cowell production costs, or $3,500, whichever is less.

FujiFilm's Donation Programs    - funds arts and culture to support the community. Grants from $1,000 to $5,000 for specific projects or programs. Funds non-profit organizations in communities where Fujifilm operates.

David B. Gold Foundation    - The Foundation funds organizations that have an impact in the San Francisco Bay Area with an emphasis on Alameda and San Francisco counties. The Foundation funds programs for Children, Youth, and Families, including Enrichment Programs for School Age Youth, Reducing Domestic Violence, and Improving the Welfare of Children. There is an online LOI inquiry; organizations will be notified within six weeks to submit a full proposal.

Green Foundation    - The funding program is aimed at uncovering new opportunities, encouraging growth, and ultimately effecting positive change in arts, education, health, and scientific research. The Foundation is dedicated to supporting institutions that focus on arts outreach and education and encourages growth in all areas of the arts. Priority is given to those institutions that promote the expansion of community arts programs and/or support youth and adult creativity in their regular schedules.

Donald and Maureen Green Foundation    - provides financial assistance to programs of non-profit organizations that are effective in achieving long-lasting improvements or advancements in the fields of music, the arts, education, animal welfare, social assistance to children, the aging, the homeless and the poor, and conservancy of natural habitats and species. Grants range from $1,000 to $10,000.

The Sam and Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts, Inc.    - artist residency program in New Berlin, NY in close proximity to Golden Artist Colors, Inc. There is no formal application process at this time. Comments and questions may be directed to info@goldenfoundation.org or (607) 847-8158.

The Gunk Foundation - Grants for Public Art Projects     - suspended arts grantmaking for 2006-2007.

Evelyn & Walter Haas Jr. Fund     - funds youth development projects in San Francisco and Alameda Counties; letters of inquiry accepted year-round. Your letter of inquiry will be reviewed within six weeks of receipt to determine whether the proposed effort fits within the Fund's giving program.

Walter & Elise Haas Fund    - funds programs in the arts that enable Bay Area residents to realize the full potential of the arts to build cross-cultural understanding and enrich individual lives; program areas include arts education, preservation of cultural heritage, and fostering shared understanding and a stronger sense of community through participation in the arts. In most cases, applicants will hear within six weeks about whether to submit additional information or a more detailed proposal.

The William Randolph Hearst Foundations     - support programs that enrich the lives of young people by engaging them in cultural activities, primarily through arts-in-education programs. Grants are awarded to major institutions and community organizations in the arts and sciences that address the lack of arts programming in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade curricula by providing comprehensive, on-site and/or outreach education activities.

Clarence E. Heller Charitable Foundation    - funds projects that help community-based orchestras and chamber music ensembles of demonstrated quality implement artistic initiatives, audience development programs, and improvements in fund-raising capacity; LOIs accepted anytime, the Board typically meets in March, June, and October. Grants range from $5,000 to $600,000.

William G. Irwin Charity Foundation     - Funds in California and Hawaii. Key areas are Arts, Culture, Humanities; Education; Health. Limits are No scholarships or other grants to individuals; no pass-through grants. Purpose is To fund charitable causes which promote or improve the physical condition of mankind in the states of California and Hawaii. Funding cycle is approximately every two months.

J.P. Morgan Chase Foundation California Philanthropy Program    - concentrates its funding Youth education - helping young people succeed in life and in work - and Community life - enriching communities with sponsorships and events focused on arts and culture, particularly organizations that focus upon capacity building, advocacy, technical assistance, and financial support to the broad arts and cultural community; arts exhibitions and performances that enhance the quality of life in the communities we serve, with emphasis on programming that addresses cultural enrichment and issues related to diversity; and organizations that focus on emerging or underrepresented artists to foster the creation of new work. Walter S. Johnson Foundation    - funds youth development projects; letters of inquiry accepted on a year-round basis. the Board meets in January, April, July and October each year). However, staff review may take three to six months' work with the applicants before the proposal is recommended.

W.K. Kellogg Foundation Youth and Education Program    - supports innovative ideas about how to engage children and youth in learning and new ways to bring together community based systems that promote learning. Online pre-proposal found on website.

Kimball Foundation    - the primary focus of the Foundation is to support organizations that benefit disadvantaged children, youth and families, and the working poor. Within the field of education and youth development, the Board is interested in academic and cultural enrichment activities, after-school and summer programs, leadership, and personal skill development, mentoring programs and environmental education.

LEF Foundation    - funds provocative and innovative arts projects in California in the specific areas of architecture, the environment, and social justice. Grants are made to projects which include an artistic and cultural overlay. One-page letters of inquiry accepted on an ongoing basis. Grants average between $2,000 and $5,000.

Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation    - funds nonprofit organizations located in, or directly serving residents of Contra Costa County; focus on education, arts, and children and families; letters or calls of inquiry are strongly encouraged. Organizations seeking information should direct inquiries to Kathleen Odne, Executive Director, at the Foundation office, or call 925-935-9988

Henry Luce Foundation Responsive grants    -- enable the foundation to offer support for projects that are crucial to the development and preservation of the field of American art. Funding for special exhibitions is not included under this category. Permanent collection projects are eligible. A letter of inquiry can be submitted at any time and the foundation's directors review proposals at board meetings three times a year.

MetLife Foundation offers both general and project support to non-profit organizations that operate under one of the following broad areas of concern: health, civic affairs, education, culture, and public broadcasting. On occasion, the Foundation establishes particular areas of interest for emphasis within a program area. Each request is reviewed to determine its general eligibility and conformity to the guidelines for the appropriate category, the year's contributions, program priorities, and geographical considerations.

Miranda Lux Foundation    - funds organizations and programs in San Francisco that serve young people under the age of 18. The Board meets in February, May, August, and November. Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact the Kenneth J. Blum, Executive Director at 415-981-2966 to determine whether their proposed program falls within the foundation's area of interest in vocational education and grantmaking priorities.

Marin Community Foundation Discretionary Grants    - supports programs in Marin County, California under guidelines determined by the Foundation's board of trustees. Grants are made in the areas of the arts, community development, education and training, the environment, human needs, and religion, ethics, and conscience. Support is given for general operating support, special projects and initiatives, and ongoing programs-depending on the focus and goals within each of the Foundation's program areas.

Macy's West Grants and Contributions     - LOI- Cultural Enrichment - Must be a 501(c)3; No support for Capital Fund Drives, Multi-Year Grants, publications, or scholarships. Grants range from $2,500 to $10,000. Non-deadline though for grants to be awarded in September, proposals must be submitted by May 15th and March awards, proposal should be submitted by November 15th.

Milagro Foundation     - will no longer accept unsolicited requests.

Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation Melody Program     - funds K-12 schools and community music programs that need new and refurbished musical instruments and/or instrument repair. Music programs must be at least three years old to apply. Schools must apply separately. Grants typically range from $500 - $8,000 worth of instruments.

Robert S. and Helen Pfeiffer Odell Fund     - broad charitable purposes, including support for the arts. Interested nonprofits must submit a written request to receive a copy of the Foundation's funding guidelines. Send requests to: 420 Montgomery Street, 7th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104.

The Bernard Osher Foundation    - seeks to improve quality of life for residents of San Francisco and Alameda Counties through arts, cultural, and educational grants.

The David and Lucile Packard Foundation    - limited to arts organizations based in San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Monterey Counties. We make grants in these local counties that advance the goals of our three programs and support arts and community organizations which offer important cultural and social services. The broad goals of the Arts subprogram are to support a vibrant community of local performing and visual arts organizations and to ensure that children have access to arts education programs and activities.

Potrero Nuevo Fund    - supports Bay Area community-based organizations in the arts, with favor going to programs that increase accessibility to making and viewing art (literary, media, performing, or visual), especially to those traditionally excluded from these experiences. Priority is given to those working in the City of San Francisco. Grants range from $1,000 to $10,000.

Singing for Change Foundation     - founded by singer Jimmy Buffet, SFC is interested in funding projects that improve the quality of life for people and empower individuals to effect positive change in their communities. Areas of interest include children and families, the environment, and disenfranchised groups. Most likely to be considered are organizations that keep their overhead low and collaborate with other groups in their community to find innovative ways of solving common problems. Grants awarded usually fall in the $500 to $10,000 range.

May and Stanley Smith Charitable Trust    - limited funding for arts education and youth programs. Guidelines are found on the website. The Charitable Trust has no proposal submission deadline, and proposals are accepted on a rolling basis. Applicants are notified promptly when their proposals are received. Applicants should expect to wait three to six months for notification of the Trustees' decision.

Sobrato Foundation    - funds arts education projects in the Silicon Valley. Its mission is to help create and sustain a vibrant and healthy community where all Silicon Valley residents have equal opportunity to live, work, and be enriched. Initial contact is via a Quick Eligibility Test online

W.L.S. Spencer Foundation    - funds activities that foster new ideas in education and encourage creativity; prefers specific initiatives, and likes the leverage that arises from seed grants, challenge grants, and matching grants.

Morris Stulsaft Foundation    -dedicated to the well-being of children and youth (ages 0 to 22) through financial support of nonprofit organizations serving foster and homeless youth, and youth with disabilities; providing childcare to low-income families and training to child care providers; and educational enrichment and mentoring to disadvantaged youth. The Board of Directors meets five times a year to review proposals. Though the priorities themselves have not changed, the board has decided to review proposals in groupings that link similar priorities together. The schedule and priority groupings are listed on the website.

Sundance Institute Documentary Fund    - Work-in-Progress projects must be in production or post-production. These submissions are eligible for the maximum grant award of $75,000. The fund supports international documentary films and videos focused on current and significant issues and movements in contemporary human rights, freedom of expression, social justice, and civil liberties.

Surdna Foundation    - funds arts education projects throughout the U.S.; online letter of inquiry.

Tiffany & Co. Foundation    - The foundation has a special appreciation and commitment to advance the arts by supporting the critically important work of educational, artistic, and cultural institutions dedicated to design excellence and to preserving the past and enriching the present and future. There is also funding for arts education programs that focus on providing talented artisans and artists with the necessary instruction to become highly skilled professionals; initial contact is LOI; Board meets twice a year.

Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation    - funds education and youth development, including some support for arts education and outreach. Priority is given to organizations within the East Bay Area of California (specifically Alameda and Contra Costa Counties). Unless initiated by a Foundation Board Director, personal communication with individual Foundation Directors by representatives of the applicant is not encouraged.

Vodafone-US Foundation     - As of October 1, 2006, has ceased making new grants.

Lawrence Weissberg Foundation    - broad charitable purposes, including funding for the arts.

Bernard E. and Alba Witkin Charitable Trust    - funds arts programs in the East Bay.
