10/1   National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowships (nomination deadline) - annually awarded to master folk and traditional artists. These fellowships recognize lifetime achievement, artistic excellence, and contributions to our nation's traditional arts heritage to master folk and traditional artists. Nominees must be worthy of national recognition and have a record of continuing artistic accomplishment. They must be actively participating in their art form, either as practitioners or as teachers. Fellows are selected according to criteria of authenticity, excellence, and significance within the particular artistic tradition. The NEA National Heritage Fellowship category is not open to application. Fellowships are awarded on the basis of nominations from the public. Each award is $25,000.

10/1   Clorox Company Foundation (competitive grants) (RECEIPT deadline, online submission preferred)) - supports programs that advance civic and cultural initiatives and projects that increase awareness of, participation in, and appreciation of arts and culture; mainly funds arts and cultural programs in Oakland. Applications must be received in the office, by mail, or delivered in person by 5 p.m. on the deadline dates; (the previous business day if deadline falls on the weekend) (also 1/1, 4/1, and 7/1).

10/1   Meet the Composer: Creative Connections Program - designed to build audiences for new music by having composers actively participate in events featuring the performance of their music. Participation must include some form of audience interaction. The October deadline is for events taking place between January and March (also 1/7, 4/1, and 6/1). Sponsoring organizations no longer need 501c3 status of fiscal sponsorship to apply.

10/1   ASCAP Foundation Music Education Full Grant Application - provides grants to organizations engaging in music education and talent development programs that are consistent with the mission and objectives of The ASCAP Foundation and which support music education programs for aspiring songwriters and composers. Average grant is $3,000 - $5,000. Must have submitted Letter of Intent by 8/1 and been invited to submit the full proposal.

10/1   Eva Leah Gunther Foundation (RECEIPT deadline) - programs benefiting young women and girls; awards made for specific individuals (also 4/1).

10/1    Stanley S. Langendorf Foundation - full proposal deadline for previous grantees in the past year or if invited after submission of letter of inquiry. Funds organizations that benefit community services/social services, youth, primary and secondary education, and the arts. Considers applications solely from organizations located in and/or providing services to the residents of the City and County of San Francisco.

10/1    Grammy Foundation Grants for Music Research and Preservation Projects (RECEIPT deadline) - supports projects that cultivate the awareness, appreciation, and advancement of the contribution of recorded music of American culture. The foundation's annual grants program offers support in two areas: 1) The Research Projects program awards grants to organizations and individuals to support efforts that advance research and implementation of original scientific research projects related to music such as teaching methodology in early childhood; the impact of music study on human development; and the medical and occupational well-being of music professionals. 2) The Archiving and Preservation Projects program awards grants to organizations and individual to support efforts that advance the archiving and preservation of the music and recorded sound heritage of the Americas. For both programs, individual grant amounts generally range from $10,000 to $40,000. Grant requests may span a time period from twelve to twenty-four months and cannot overlap with previously awarded projects.

10/1   CHIME - mentorship program for professional modern dance choreographers. A project of the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company, CHIME (Choreographers in Mentorship Exchange) provides grants and cost-free studio time to support an exploration between professional choreographers interested in learning from one another. Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to attend the CHIME Informational Gathering, August 23, 2008, Margaret Jenkins Dance Lab (301-8th Street, Suite 200, San Francisco) 11:00AM - 1:00PM. Margaret Jenkins and staff will answer questions about the program in general, including the review criteria and the panel selection process. The MJDC strongly recommends this session as it provides direct and specific guidance for applicants as they develop their proposals. No RSVP necessary. Guidelines and applications are available August 1, 2008 on the website.

10/1    Institute of Museum & Library Services Conservation Project Support -- awards matching grants to help museums identify conservation needs and priorities and perform activities to ensure the safekeeping of their collections. All applications must demonstrate that the primary goal of the project is conservation care and not collection management or maintenance. Grants are available in surveys (general, detailed condition, or environmental), training, treatment, and environmental improvements.

10/1   Fireman's Fund Insurance Company - primarily supports California-based nonprofit organizations located in Marin, Sonoma, and East Bay counties, where its company is located, and where a majority of its employees live and work. First consideration is human needs and education. Deceisions are usually made within 90 days, and grants typically range from $1,000 to $10,000 (also 4/1).

10/2   California Documentary Project - supports documentary film, video, radio and new media projects that explore and interpret subjects relevant to California's past, present, or future. Applicants may apply for a Research and Development Grant, a Production Grant, or a New Media Grant. The online application for these grants will be posted on the website on September 2, 2008.

10/10   William and Flora Hewlett Foundation: Music (full proposal, if invited or current grantee) (RECEIPT deadline) - funds organizations that have annual operating budgets larger than $100,000, and are at a mid-stage (rather than a start-up phase) of organizational development. Organizations applying to the Hewlett Foundation are now required to have their California Cultural Data Project profile completed in order to submit a full proposal.

10/10   National Endowment for the Arts American Masterpieces: Chamber Music (RECEIPT deadline) will celebrate the extraordinary and rich evolution of chamber music in the United States. Through performances and related residencies, American chamber music of the highest quality -- that otherwise would not be available -- will be experienced by Americans in communities across the nation. Grants generally range from $5,000 to $75,000.

10/15   Shubert Foundation (RECEIPT deadline) - supports not-for-profit, professional resident theatre and dance companies in the United States. The Foundation awards unrestricted grants for general operating support, rather than funding for specific projects. Funding for dance, arts related, and education programs (theater funding requests are due 12/3); audited financial statements are required by 12/17. Organizations that have fully audited financial statements but an annual budget of under $150,000, however, should contact The Foundation before making formal application.

10/20   Institute of International Education/U.S. Fulbright 2008-2009 Competition (RECEIPT deadline) - see website for nations/areas of study; deadline for the applications to be received electronically by IIE is October 20, 2008. Hard copy applications and all suprrt documents must be received by October 22, 2008. If you are applying through your university, please consult your Fulbright Program Advisor for your campus deadline.

10/24   Staples Foundation for Learning - provides funding to programs that support or provide job skills and/or education for all people, with a special emphasis on disadvantaged youth. The organization must: 1. Have a nonprofit tax-exempt classification under 501c3 of the IRS, and 2. Align with Staples Foundation for Learning's mission and give focus on job skills and education. The application is online, but complete review of the website is encouraged.

ALSO:   ArtVenture, in association with ARTICLE 19, is proud to launch the inaugural Freedom to Create Prize. This international prize will recognize artists who use their talents to promote human rights, including the freedom of expression, empathy, equality, and understanding. Three categories: The main prize will be open to individuals or artistic groups in all creative fields including the visual and performance arts, music, crafts, design and literature, the winner of this award will receive US $50,000; ArtVenture Freedom to Create Youth Prize will be open to artists who are under the age of 18 with the winner receiving US $25,000 scholarship and advocacy prize; and the ArtVenture Freedom to Create Imprisoned Artist Prize, will focus on artists who are currently imprisoned for their artwork. The winner will receive US $25,000 towards supporting their family, paying legal costs and supporting advocacy efforts.

ALSO:   Theatre Bay Area New Works Fund (RECEIPT deadline) - seeks to provide local playwrights with new ways to establish relationships with local theatres and to encourage Bay Area theatre companies to foster and produce the work of local playwrights. The New Works Fund annually awards two grants of $10,000 each to a creative team composed of a Bay Area playwright and theatre company with $5,000 going to the playwright and $5,000 to the theatre company. In fulfillment of the grant, the writer and company will develop and fully produce the awarded new work. Deadline was 10/1 in 2007; keep checking website for 2008 deadline.

ALSO:   CMA/ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming - presented annually to ensembles, presenters, and festivals that demonstrate a commitment to contemporary chamber music programming, especially works written since 1980. These awards are given jointly by CMA and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. The award categories are: Chamber Ensembles, Presenters and Festivals, Jazz, and Special Recognition. Deadline was 10/5 in 2007; keep checking website for 2008 deadline.

ALSO:   American Antiquarian Society - a national research library and learned society of American history and culture, is calling for applications for visiting fellowships for historical research by creative and performing artists, writers, film makers, journalists, and other persons whose goals are to produce imaginative, non-formulaic works dealing with pre-twentieth-century American history. Successful applicants are those whose work is for the general public rather than for academic or educational audiences. The Society's goal in sponsoring this program is to multiply and improve the ways in which an understanding of history is communicated to the American people. 2007 deadline was 10/9; keep checking website for 2008 deadline.

ALSO:   Theatre Communications Group New Generations Program: Future Collaboration (Preliminary Proposal Deadline) - travel grants of $3,000 will be awarded in the fall/winter and spring/summer seasons to theatres and theatre professionals for unrestricted international travel, enabling them to share ideas and techniques and/or collaborate with their colleagues around the world. ALSO:   Theatre Communications Group New Generations Program: Future Audiences (Preliminary Proposal Deadline) - Theatres expand and strengthen relationships with young, culturally specific, disabled and/or under-served audiences through creative strategies and unique audience cultivation efforts that have proven effective. The grant of up to $32,500/year to two years is a one-to-one matching grant. Deadline was 10/9 in 2007; keep checking website.

ALSO:   Theatre Communications Group New Generations Program: Future Leaders: Mentorships (Preliminary Proposal Deadline). Early career theatre professionals in any discipline are given two-year paid ($32,500/year) mentorship positions at a theatre and are mentored by an established professional in their field. In addition, grants of up to $15,000 are available to repay a mentee's student loans. Deadline was 10/9 in 2007; keep checking website..

ALSO:   Chamber Music America French American Jazz Exchange Program (RECEIPT deadline) - support for collaborative projects that unite French and American jazz artists. The program supports initiatives in both countries. In forming international relationships, artists are encouraged to think beyond traditional boundaries. Collaborations with musicians who champion world, electronic, contemporary classical, or other genres are welcome. Projects may include (but are not limited to) composition, touring, recording, and audience-development activities. Public performance is required, with the understanding that jazz speaks to diverse populations and experiencing music together bridges differences. French and American citizens or legal residents are encouraged to apply. Grants are for up to $10,000 each. Deadline was 10/2 in 2007; keep checking website.

ALSO:   Chamber Music America New Works: Encore - designed to bring about greater exposure of CMA-commissioned jazz works in venues beyond the traditional clubs. Funds are available for presenters and festivals, as well as the previously commissioned ensembles themselves, to support further performances of works created through CMA's New Works: Creation and Presentation program. Works must be performed by the composer-led ensembles for which they were originally commissioned. Grants will range from $5,000 to $10,000. Deadline was 10/22 in 2007; keep checking website.

ALSO:   Japan Foundation - Performing Arts Japan Program (RECEIPT deadline) - supports initiatives taken by U.S. nonprofit organizations to provide geographically diverse American audiences with greater exposure to Japanese performing arts; also encourages collaborations between Japanese and American artists, which will further an appreciation of Japanese culture when presented to American audiences. The grants are made to nonprofit organizations in the U.S. only. For projects taking place between April 2009-March 2010. Deadline was 10/29 in 2007; keep checking website.

ALSO:    Puffin Foundation - makes grants that encourage emerging artists in the fields of art, music, theater, dance, photography, and literature whose works due to their genre and/or social philosophy might have difficulty being aired. The Foundation does not have the means to fund large film/documentary proposals, grants for travel, continuing education, or the writing or publishing of books. Grants may only be awarded to permanent residents and citizens of the United States. U.S. citizens whose projects encompass work in other countries are still eligible to apply. Average grants are: $1,000 - $2,500. The Foundation will be accepting applications for the 2009 cycle Puffin Foundation Grant Awards starting September through December 30, 2008, postmarked by midnight. Applications postmarked after this date will not be reviewed. ALSO:   Marin Arts Council Affiliate Innovation Grants - This program awards grants to support the creation and presentation of new work through partnerships between performing arts organizations and individual artists. These grants require a dollar for dollar match. For more information please email lance@marinarts.org.

ALSO:   Marin Fund for Artists New Work Fellowships - offers a small number of large grants to established artists who have demonstrated a track record in their field, are currently active in their art form, and who present a specific proposals for the creation of new work. The Fund is anticipating a deadline in 2008 pending sufficient funding.

ALSO:   Marin Arts Council Community Arts Partnership Grants -- grants of $5,000 or less are available to Marin-based arts organizations or to partnership projects in all media. This program encourages people to experience and practice the creative process through local, community-based art activities, and encourages professional artists to become involved in the cultural life of their home communities. We seek to generate excitement about the role of the arts in our community, to expand the experience and practice of the arts to people with otherwise limited opportunities, and to encourage the creation of new work or experiences. Grants require a one to one match in cash or donated services or materials. For projects happening in calendar year 2009. Deadline was 11/1 in 2007; keep checking website.

ALSO:   East Bay Community Foundation: East Bay Fund for Small Performing Arts Organizations - for arts organizations with annual budgets of $750,000 or less. Eligible groups should be located in and performing in Alameda County or Contra Costa County and have a track record of performance over the last 12 months. Provides funds for: general support, support of an individual artist in furtherance of the artistic goals of the group; special projects; and to meet challenge grants on non-capital projects. NOTE: funds for the 2007-08 round of this program have been expended; watch the website starting Oct. 1 for information about the 2008-09 round.

ALSO:
   E. Nakamichi Foundation - supports projects that encourage the propagation and appreciation of well known baroque and other fine forms of classical music; generally underwrites public performances which are well supported by the local community; currently accepting proposals for projects taking place in 2009. Starting in 2008 the foundation is accepting grant applications only from those organizations that were successfully awarded a grant from us in the years between 2000 and 2007.


ALSO:   TCG/ITI Travel Grants - funding for theatres and individual theatre professionals (artists, administrators, or educators) - to strengthen relationships with Russia and Eastern Europe -- $3,000 each, which may cover transportation and living expenses essential to the project including research materials, communication costs, theatre tickets, and/or the services of an interpreter. For travel between January 2009 and July 2009 (also 3/31). Deadline was 10/26 in 2007: keep checking website.

ALSO:   Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Institutional Grants Program - to foster educational activities between the public and the film industry, and to encourage an appreciation of the modern picture as an art form and a vocation. Typical funding ranges from $5,000 to $15,000 per institution. Check website in early October for information on 2009 round; 2008 deadline was 1/15.
