AUGUST 2008

8/1   Alliance for California Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program - encourages the continuation of the state's traditional arts and cultures by contracting master artists to offer intensive, one-on-one training to qualified apprentices. Each contract will support a period of concentrated learning for individuals who have shown a commitment to and a talent for a specific artistic tradition. Contracts of $3,000 will be made with California-based master artists to cover master artist's fees, supplies and travel. The apprenticeship will begin on or after January 1, 2009, and must be completed by December 31, 2009. The apprenticeship must last between six months to one year.

8/1   Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation Melody Program - the goal of the foundation is to help children achieve their greatest potential and to close the gap that exists in under-served communities. The Melody Program helps K-12 school music programs that take place during the regular school day. Music programs must be at least three years old to apply. Schools must apply separately. Grants typically range from $500 - $8,000 worth of instruments.

Music programs must be at least three years old or have a music-related umbrella organization that is at least three years old to apply. Grants typically range from $500 - $8,000 worth of instruments.

8/1   Rotterdam International Film Festival-Hubert Bals Fund - Provides support to feature-length narratives and creative documentaries from developing nations at any stage of production with the potential for theatrical distribution. "Projects should be original, authentic and rooted in the culture of the applicant's country and should contribute to the development of the local film industry." Up to 10,000 Euros available for script and development; 30,000 Euros for post-production; and 15,000 Euros for distribution. (ALSO 3/1)

8/1   Japan/US Friendship Commission (RECEIPT deadline) - supports the highest quality endeavors with the following elements: contemporary forms of art; collaborative projects, both in terms of inter-disciplinary forms and among artists from the two countries; projects reflecting the breadth and depth of American cultural diversity; projects including public outreach activities, as well as sites and venues in Japan that historically have not had a tradition of exchange with the United States. Types of projects include performing arts exchanges, exhibition and visual arts exchanges, and infrastructure support for arts exchanges (see ALSO US/Japan Creative Artists Residency). Potential applicants are urged to consult with Commission staff before submitting an application (ALSO 3/1).

8/1   Mockingbird Foundation - supports music education programs; use online letter of inquiry form (ALSO 2/1). Grants range from $50 to $5,000. If invited, full proposal due in October.

8/1   Tiger Woods Foundation (RECEIPT deadline) - funds programs that provide opportunities to underserved children and youth (aged 5-17) in American cities; key program areas are Education and Youth Development. Education focus is on programs and projects that enhance the learning process for children. Youth development focus is on year-round mentoring and/or tutoring programs that help youth build self-esteem, positive values, expand opportunities and increase their potential. Organizations must have IRS qualifying public support of over $100,000 from the preceding year, and submit either a 990 or an audited financial statement (ALSO 2/1, 5/1, and 11/1). Award decisions 10/15.

8/1   Trust for Mutual Understanding Full Proposal (if invited) - makes grants to American nonprofit organizations to support the international travel component of cultural and environmental exchanges conducted in partnership with institutions and individuals in Russia and Eastern and Central Europe. Priority consideration is given to projects in which direct, professional interaction plays a major role. Must have submitted a letter of inquiry at least three months prior to the deadline for submitting the final proposal (ALSO 2/1).

8/1   ASCAP Foundation LOI (RECEIPT deadline) - grants to organizations engaged in music education programs for aspiring songwriters and composers. The foundation's grants average between $3,000 and $5,000 each. Grants are made on an annual one-time basis. Applicant organizations must have 501(c)(3) status in order to submit a Letter of Inquiry (Full proposals, if invited, are due 10/1).

8/1   Thomas J. Long Foundation Full Application - (RECEIPT deadline) supporting charitable organizations in the following East Bay counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Napa, Solano, and Sonoma. The Foundation operates on a responsive grantmaking basis and awards grants in five selected fields of interest: Arts & Culture, Conservation, Education, Health, and Human Services. Grant proposals are considered semi-annually in the spring and fall using a competitive application process. Must have submitted a request for application by 7/15.

8/2   Jerome Composers Commissioning Program - American Composers Forum seeks applications from emerging composers from Minnesota or the five boroughs of New York City; or emerging composers living elsewhere who partner with Minnesota performers. The program supports the creation of new musical works by emerging composers, composer/performers, improvisors, and sound artists. JCCP helps towards the cost of the creator's commissiong fee. A composer applies in conjunction with a performing organization (which may be any soloists of group, not necessarily a non-profit organization). Alternatively, composer/performer/improvisors who play in their own work apply in conjunction with a venue or presenter (e.g., school, theater, gallery , featival). Composers residing in Minnesota or in the five boroughs of New York City may apply with performers based anywhere in the world. Composers residing elsewhere must work with Minnestoa-based partners and present the work in Minnesota. JCCP will grant up to $8,000 each towards the composer's commission fee.

8/4   James Irvine Foundation Creative Connections Fund (RECEIPT) - supports creativity and the expansion of diverse, relevant cultural offerings in local communities across California and primarily outside the San Francisco Bay Area. The Fund offers project grants of up to $50,000, over one or two years, through an open, competitive review process. The Creative Connections Fund aims to reach small and midsize arts organizations with a diversity of projects and ideas. Applications may be submitted beginning May 1, 2008 and are due August 4, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Funding decisions will be made by November 2008.

8/4-9/22   Creative Capital/Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant Program - a three-year initiative designed to support writers working on contemporary art. The program aims to promote critical discourse that is both rigorous and accessible, to foster innovation in arts writing, and to encourage writing that nurtures connections between art and the public at large. The program will recognize and support the contribution of individual arts writers through project-based grants ranging from $3,000 to $50,000 each. Contemporary art historians, critics, curators, journalists, and experts from other disciplines who focus on the visual arts are invited to apply.

8/7   Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) Program Challenge Fund - awards grants for high-profile, primetime limited series and specials for national public television "that offer a definitive take on a subject or break new ground in popular public service media." (ALSO 12/9).

8/8   Society for the Arts in Healthcare/Johnson & Johnson Grants Program (RECEIPT deadline for online Letter of Inquiry) - funding to promote the use of the arts to enhance the healthcare experience for patients, their families and caregivers. Proposals are being sought from healthcare and/or arts organizations who have established arts in healthcare programs that operate or warrant replication in underserved communities. Applicants must be SAH members.

8/11   National Endowment for the Arts: Access to Artistic Excellence 2 - supports projects that foster and preserve excellence in the arts and provide access to the arts for all Americans.

8/14   Gerbode/Hewlett 2008 Choreographer Collaboration Awards -- up to six grants of $75,000 each for the commission and premiere of six major new dance compositions, created by California choreographers in collaboration with other California artists. These choreographer collaboration grants are part of a new, three-year $1,350,000 initiative by the Wallace Alexander Gerbode and William and Flora Hewlett Foundations to support fresh, dynamic collaborations in contemporary dance, theater and music. In 2009, grants will be made for playwright collaborations, and in 2010, for composer collaborations. Proposed commissions for original works in any dance style or format will be accepted. Applicant organizations must be nonprofit and based in the counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Santa Clara, San Francisco, San Mateo, Solano or Sonoma.

8/14   Zellerbach Family Foundation - support for community arts organizations from San Francisco, Contra Costa, and Alameda counties, representing the fields of dance, theater, visual arts, music, festivals, poetry, and publications. The foundation funds mainly performance-oriented requests that represent contemporary, cutting-edge new work. Decision 9/15. ALSO 11/10 for decision 12/9. First time applicants should call Linda Howe at (415) 421-2629, ext. 11 prior to deadline.

8/15   Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation (RECEIPT by 12:00 noon) - exclusively religious, charitable, scientific, literary, or educational purposes restricted to local giving in the nine counties of the greater San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma).

8/15   Open Meadows Foundation - funding for projects that are led by and benefit women and girls. Open Meadows Foundation funds projects that do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, age, or ability. It offers grants up to $2,000 to projects that are designed and implemented by women and girls; reflect the diversity of the community served by the project in both its leadership and organization; promote building community power; promote racial, social, economic, and environmental justice; have limited financial access or have encountered obstacles in their search for funding. Organizational budget should not exceed $150,000.

8/15   Stocker Foundation Full Proposal (RECEIPT deadline by 5pm; if invited) - supports fine art programs in all mediums (dance, drama, music, creative writing, and visual arts) that provide school aged children and community members with access; funding is restricted in California to San Francisco; must have submitted LOI on 7/3.

8/15    Wattis Foundation Full (if invited from LOI)

5/1-8/15   Union Pacific Foundation - online preliminary form must be submitted in advance of 8/15 full proposal deadline; organizations must be located in a community served by Union Pacific Railroad, be a 501(c)(3) public charity as identified by the IRS, and fall within one of the three areas of interest, including the fine arts. In this category, the foundation's goal is to create a wider opportunity for the enjoyment of and participation in the visual and performing arts. A limited amount of funding is available for this category. Preference will be given to those organizations with whom the Foundation has an established relationship. Decision 2/09.

7/15-8/15   Morris Stulsaft Foundation (RECEIPT 12pm) - dedicated to the well-being of children and youth (ages 0 to 22) through financial support of nonprofit organizations providing social services; education, including arts education; and physical and mental health; provides funding for organizations in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara Counties. NOTE: this submission window if for educational enrichment provided by after-school and in-school programs and summer programs including camps; decision expected in January 2008 (arts & culture applications ALSO accepted 11/15-12/15).

8/22   San Francisco Foundation - full proposals (if invited, from the 6/2 LOI deadline).

8/22   San Francisco Arts Commission: Creative Space - Grants of up to $20,000 to support the enhancement of arts facilities in the city. Goals are: 1) To advance the improvement of existing arts facilities and the successful development of new ones that will support the work of San Francisco's arts organizations; and 2) To promote the availability of affordable live/work spaces for low- and moderate-income artists. 2008-2009 guidelines available on website in July.

8/28   San Francisco Arts Commission: Cultural Equity Initiative Level 2 - grants to support the development, sustainability, and growth of San Francisco arts organizations that are deeply rooted in, and able to express the experiences of, historically underserved populations, such as Native American, African-American, Asian-American, Disabled, Latino, LGBT, Pacific Islander, and Women. Grant Awards are up to $100,000 to support organizational development initiatives of substantial scope and ambition over a period of two or three years; and are for organizations who have received at least one Level One Grant. 2008-2009 guidelines will be on website in July. Organizations applying to the Arts Commission: Cultural Equity Grants Programs are now required to have their California Cultural Data Project profile completed in order to apply.

8/29   Open Circle Foundation - (postmark or in the office) funding for projects by artists that bring us together and increase our understanding of each other and of our natural environment; mainly supports individuals and small grassroots organizations, but ALSO may make project-specific grants to larger organizations. The Foundation gives preference to efforts that build relationships at the grassroots level-projects that galvanize communities, bridge gaps, support neighborhoods. The Foundation has a strong preference for projects from individuals and organizations with deep and broad connections to their communities, or projects with the potential to generate greater community awareness. In addition to grants, the Foundation may from time to time make awards to reward outstanding individuals who have demonstrated excellence in work closely aligned with the Foundation's principles. Current grantees must have submitted final report by 8/1. Notification by 12/31/08.

ALSO   San Francisco Foundation - FAITHS Art and Culture Mini-Grants - Faith-based organizations and congregations often serve as a community hub for immigrant, refugee, and grassroots communities, while acting as a focus for cultural and artistic activity. To enhance this exchange of art and ideas, the Foundation's FAITHS Program and Arts and Culture Program have initiated the FAITHS Arts and Culture Mini-Grants. These grants support free, community-based artistic and cultural activities, with a priority focus on immigrant, refugee, and grassroots communities. The next deadline for applications for this grant pool will likely be in September 2008 with decisions in October.

ALSO   Agape Foundation Letter of Inquiry (RECEIPT deadline) - supports progressive arts and media, specifically distribution of media projects that support grassroots organizing and promote peace and justice. Applicants in this area should carefully review the Foundation's Grant Guidelines for the Distribution of Media Projects. There is ALSO a spring round of grantmaking with an LOI due in February.

ALSO   California Casualty Group - has provided support in the past for innovative programs that offer student enrichment in the arts (music, dance, theater, and visual arts). To get information about current priorities and to request guidelines, write to Coordinator, Contribution Committee, California Casualty Group, P.O. Box M (CD-1), San Mateo, CA 94402-0080. New information should be available in July 2008.

ALSO   Arts Council Silicon Valley ArtsEnhance - Marketing and Communications for Arts Organizations - a day-long conference and a funding program providing marketing tools, training, and grants to empower arts organizations to heighten their visibility, promote their programming, and strengthen their audience development activities. Small to mid-sized (annual budgets under $2,000,000) arts organizations based in Santa Clara County are encouraged to send up to three participants to the conference which will be held at Foothill College Monday, September 17 and Tuesday, September 18. All-day participation by at least one member of an organization in the Conference is mandatory for application eligibility. Guidelines and applications will be introduced at the Conference. Keep checking website for deadlines.

ALSO   CHIME - mentorship program for professional modern dance choreographers. A project of the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company, CHIME (Choreographers in Mentorship Exchange) provides grants and cost-free studio time to support an exploration between professional choreographers interested in learning from one another. Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to attend the CHIME Informational Gathering August 23, 2008, Margaret Jenkins Dance Lab, 301-8th Street, Suite 200, San Francisco, 11:00AM - 1:00 PM. Margaret Jenkins and staff will answer questions about the program in general, including the review criteria and the panel selection process. The MJDC strongly recommends this session as it provides direct and specific guidance for applicants as they develop their proposals. No RSVP necessary. Guidelines and application are available August 1, 2008 on website.
